Computerized Tomography (CT) scans combine a series of X-ray images taken from different angles around your body and uses computer processing to create cross-sectional images of the bones, blood vessels and soft tissues. CT scan images provide more-detailed information than plain X-rays.

What are CT scans with contrast?

CT scans are ordered either with or without contrast, being administered orally or intravenously. Oral contrast is administered by drinking the contrast, which helps differentiate the bowel and GI tract from other organs and tissues within the abdomen. Intravenous contrast is administered through an IV that is placed temporarily in your arm. This helps distinguish selected areas of the body from surrounding tissue by improving the visibility of specific organs, blood vessels or tissues, helping physicians diagnose medical conditions. Allergies to iodinated contrast are very rare. If you have experienced a reaction in the past, please notify your physician before scheduling.

During administration of IV contrast, you may feel a warm flushing sensation throughout the body as well as a salty or metallic taste in your mouth. These sensations usually only last a few minutes and are not an indication of an allergic reaction.

When will I know my results?

You will receive your results from your ordering physician within a few business days, unless otherwise stated. A radiologist, a doctor who specializes in reading imaging exams, will read and compile a report of the image findings, which will be sent to the physician who ordered the exam.
